Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I have closed Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems#Time for a ban on DRs and speedy deletions? as having a consensus for a three-month ban from speedy deletions and DRs. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:32, 26 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

License issue with File:1846 Ludvig Verner Helms Daguerreotype.jpg[edit]

Hello, I noticed the subject file I uploaded has been flagged for an incorrect license. I am relatively new at this, and would appreciate any assistance that can be offered. I have read the licensing help pages.

The image is an ancestor of mine (Helms), and the image is in the possession of my family. Helms died in 1918, in England. So, assuming he is the "creator" of the image, it looks like the image should have a public domain license.

However, a copy of the image was published in a book in England "The Borneo Story" in 1956. The image was provided to the author by Helms' family at the time. The image I've used was not copied from the book; it came from the original in our possession. At the time I uploaded, I assumed any existing copyright from the book would not apply to my image since it didn't come from the book. But now I'm not so sure...

Any advice would be appreciated. This seems to be a complicated situation (for me, at least) that crosses international boundaries (I am in US) and can remove the image if that is the safest approach.

Thanks! GuildCV1 (talk) 16:12, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@GuildCV1: I don't think that original photographer could be deduced, so {{PD-old-assumed}} is applicable. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:17, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
What about the copy published in the book in London in 1956? GuildCV1 (talk) 15:01, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
2D reproduction doesn't not create new copyrights. See w:en:Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:36, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for the help! I'll update the copyright on the helms picture. GuildCV1 (talk) 16:34, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:====㽅==== 1.jpg Copyright Problem[edit]

Hello. I am a Wikisource editor. I ported this file because it was an image taken by a South Korean national organization in charge of researching, collecting, compiling, promoting the study of historical materials on Korean history, called the National Institute of Korean History. The image was of a picture on an ancient historical text called the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty. I don't know much about Copyright, but please tell me the appropriate Copyright of such content.

Features:

This file's picture was a portion of a larger picture taken by a South Korean national organization, in South Korea, of a page of a book so old it is undoubtedly in the public domain. What should the Copyright of such image be? Blahhmosh (talk) 03:37, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Blahhmosh: Public domain media should be tagged with proper public domain tag. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory/South Korea. Same applies for other similar files uploaded by you. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:28, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, but how do I change the copyright of a file? Blahhmosh (talk) 16:17, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just click edit tab on file page and replace {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} with {{PD-South Korea}}. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:23, 27 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
